Day trip to Espinho
We travelled by train to the nearby town of Espinho, our friend’s home town, to experience a Portuguese Saint’s Day celebration. This is an annual event in the town which honours that Saint who watches over those who protect us; taking part in the procession were firemen, army cadets etc along with other local groups. Some roads through the centre of town were decorated with coloured salt depicting relevant religious scenes.
While waiting for the procession to start we spent some time on the beach.
The procession was magical with music from marching bands and decorated floats for lots of different Saints. Our toddler loved watching.
In the evening, after we’d eaten more yummy sea food, the celebrations were still going on with a fun fair and brass marching bands which we thoroughly enjoyed.
If you are in Portugal on a Saints day then we would definitely recommend going along for a great day out.
